Adidas x Parley for the oceans

For those among you that don’t really know me, let me tell you something about myself. In both my Bachelor and Master degree I made my final projects around sustainable topics. For my bachelor my final project evolved around solar energy in the Middle East. My final project for my Master was all about sustainability for SME’s in Belgium.

What I want to tell you with this introduction is that sustainability is a topic that I really care about. We, as youngsters in this world, need to to think about what we are doing to our planet and what kind of planet we want to live in. Off course that is why I got extremely enthusiastic when I saw the news about Adidas’s new trainers.

Adidas recently unleashed the news about their new UltraBOOST uncaged Parley running shoes. Adidas is the first to cooperating with “Parley for the oceans” and create performance sportswear out of plastic pollution pulled from the ocean. I love how they take the problem and transform it into the solution. As Adidas says on its website “The threat in the thread”.

First of all, I really love the design! The colors are gorgeous and perfect for summer. Unfortunately, here in Belgium winter is coming … Personally I’m not a fan of the “sock”-feeling, like you are not wearing any shoes but socks. It’s very comfortable, but for running and HITT exercises I need me a firm shoe that supports my feet. 7.000 pairs will be sold, and you can get yours for 200€. Too be honest, I think the price is too high. I’m not sure if many people are willing to pay around 200€ for a shoe that is 95% plastic, but hey we’re supporting the environment right?! And what’s more, each pair is made out of 11 plastic bottles, that is a lot my friend!

The trainers are not yet available, but the price is know and you can sign up to get an advance warning on when they will be available and get updates on their other eco-innovations. We know meanwhile that it is only 4 days until they will be available, so keep your eyes open for it! The shoes will be available online and in selected stores.
